What impact does the westernization of early childhood assessments (such as gross motor assessments) have on equity in early childcare? Are there other methods of assessment that would be more productive and inclusive?
Gross motor assessment: The term gross motor development refers to the physical skills where thw arms, legs are used, for walking, running throwing, lifting etc. These skills are related to balance of the body, strength in the body, reaction speed and body awareness.
In 3-4 months , the baby can raise head , 4 moths he rolls back,7 months he can bear weight on one hand, he sits alone, 8-10 months he crawls 15 months he starts walking all alone, walks up and down the steps, 2 years he can walk and run faily, can jump on both feet, can kick a ball, 3 years he can jump and climb well, can ride a tricycle, 5 years, a child can begin to swim, climb wall.
This are generally which determines a child progress at the rate expected for his age. but fine motor skills are necessary to engane in smaller, more prcise movements normally using their hands and fingers. Fine motor skills are different from gross motor skills which require less precision to perform. Fine motor skills improve the child performanbe, For example at the age of 2-3 years, a child can do many things with his hands, like mold clay into rough shapes, scribble with the cryons, building blocks. A child uses one hand to do all these works at these age.
At 3-4 years children, starts to wear the dress gains independence in dressing and undressing themselves, they start using sciccors to cut the papers, before he starts to go to school, they gain little independence for themselves.
During 4-5 years the fine motor skills are refined upon earlier skills, they start to button and unbutton their clothes by themselves, artistic kills improves where they start copying drawing like letters, circles, triangles etc. at 5-7 years they are agle to use paints, pencils with better control, have self care, like brushing their teeth, combing their hair, feed thewselves without the help of the parents
