1. Retroactive interference occurs when new memories inhibit the
retention of old memories. For example, after learning your
friend's new office address, you are unable to remember her home
address.
2. Proactive interference occurs when past memories inhibit the
individual from memorizing. For example, you are not able to
remember your new phone number because you have been using your old
phone number for years.
3. Repression refers to an unconscious process by which anxiety
provoking thoughts, memories, or impulses are excluded from
conscious awareness. For example, a wife forgets all the details
about the day her husband physically assaulted her.
4. Infantile amnesia is the inability of human adults to remember
experiences and memories that occurred during the first few years
of life (0-3 years). For example, almost all of us are unable to
recall the say we spoke our first word.
