Vitamin D is a hormone produced in our body in response to sunlight. It helps in absorption of Calcium which is required for our bones. It is also required for-

  • Muscle movement
  • Cell growth regulation
  • Fighting infections
  • Transmit messages through neurons.

Elderly

With age, intestinal absorption is impaired and thickness of skin also reduces. If there is reduced dietary intake of vitamin and less exposure to sunlight then elderly will develop a deficiency of Vitamin D.

Problems due to vitamin d deficiency-

It weakens the bones and there is increased risk of fractures. It increases the risk of osteoporosis and other bone disorders. It also increases the risk for diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

children

Children need a good amount of vitamin d in their body as at this age their bones are growing. Deficiency of Vitamin d can lead to stunted growth and deformities like rickets. It will cause muscle weakness and delayed motor development
