Question 1: What would a psychologist trained in the biological perspective say about the existence of the unconscious?
Question 2: Ted is a freshman at your college. He has been drinking a lot lately. There is some concern that Ted may be an alcoholic. Analyze Ted’s behavior using a biological psychology perspective.
1. Unconscious is just a state of mind, here an individual remains unaware of the situations and circumstances taking place in his/her surroundings. If an individual is aware the state of mind is known as conscious. All these studies were done by Sigmund and his followers.
Ego is an important part of a conscious mind. Sometimes human brain prefers to remain unconscious, reason being; lots of emotions and expectations may cause emotional hurt. To avoid such mental anarchy, individual suppress their emotions and become unaware of their surroundings. It ultimately leads to the state of unconscious.
Study of unconscious is a main tool in Psychoanalysis.
2. Initially Ted was not alcoholic, later he became, why?
We should analyze his daily routines. We should talk to him about his daily interactions with various persons. We should consider following points-
a. is he emotionally weak?
b. does he prefer to remain silent and alone?
c. does he share his food with others?
d. does he prefers to live in solitary?
If answers to such questions are "YES" that means he is ignoring the society. He has lost all his expectations. He enjoys alone. He is going towards a state of unconscious. He has now no ego and pride. He has reached to a stage of immediate consultation with a psychology expert.
