More and more companies are requiring employees to provide the company with access to all of the employee's social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. Some employers are going as far as to require employees to provide user names and passwords for each account. Do you feel that an employer has a justified reason for asking for access to an employee's social media accounts? Why or why not?
Employers are not justified in asking for social media data as it can create data leakages, data manipulation, loss of credentials and privacy, threat to confidentiality of information and exposure of ones privacy to public and thus employers strictly violate confidential laws.
Only few states in US have data privacy laws and thus many companies have exposed loopholes and asked for confidential data. Many times it has caused negative externality like data corruption and accessibility to hackerd ehich can cause mental issues, health hazards, depression, stress, anxiety as negative ramifications and hence this is completely illegal and unethical.
Companies can rather monitor social media activities rather than accessibility to key passwords and IDs.
States and Federal government must collectively pass laws to enforce strict compliance to social media norms and companies must have better data protection mechanisms and cybersecurity efficient protocol backed by third party to maintain integrity and avoid data manipulation.
