- Advising -Provides guidance, evaluation,
personal opinion, or direction. Such a response puts the listener's
point of view upon the communicator, and it establishes listener
control over the conversation subject.
- Deflecting - Switches the emphasis from the
issue with the communicator to the one the listener chooses.
Listeners divert focus away from the original problem or
statement.
- Probing - Asks a question about what the
communicator has just said or a topic the listener has picked. A
probe's purpose is to obtain additional information, to help the
communicator say more about the topic, or to help the listener
encourage more relevant responses. Emphasis on the questions on
'what.'
- Reflecting - Is to mirror the message received
back to the communicator and to express the person's understanding
and acceptance. Reflecting the message in various terms makes it
possible for the speaker to feel listened to, heard and able to
discuss the topic in greater detail.
