According to ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine), what are the different levels of care for the treatment of substance use disorders? Provide at least one example of a consideration in each level regarding working with individuals with disabilities.
ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) lists five different
levels of care for the treatment of substance use disorders:
1. Level 0.5, Early intervention - This includes assessment and
preventive services for individuals at risk of developing a
substance use disorder.
2. Level 1, Outpatient Services - This usually involves recovery
oriented and motivational enhancement therapies for individuals
already diagnosed with a substance use disorder.
3. Level 2, Intensive Outpatient Services or Partial
Hospitalization - These services are directed towards adolescents
and adults to treat multidimensional instability.
4. Level 3, Residential or Inpatient Services - This includes
clinically managed and medically monitored moderate to high
intensity services for patients.
5. Level 4, Medically Managed Intensive Inpatient Services: These
services are involve 24 hour daily care by nurses and physicians,
with the availability of counseling.
