Solutions

Expert Solution

Dyslipidemia: This is a metabolic abnormality characterized by abnormally low or high concentrations (in general) of lipids in the circulation. The common cause of dyslipidemia is diet, lifestyle, and hyperinsulinemia.

The diagnostic tests: In general, the diagnosis is done by determining the complete blood lipid profile of a blood sample (obtained when the patient fast for about 12 hours). This includes the cholesterol level, LDL (low-density lipids), HDL (high-density lipids), and triglycerides. Based on these results, the patients may have to undergo a graded exercise test.

. Treatment:

Exercise recommendations: Regular aerobic exercise

Nutritional protocols and lifestyle modifications: The total intake of fat must be restricted to 25% to 30% of total calories. The saturated fat should not exceed 7%, the polyunsaturated fats can be 10% or less, and about 20% of monounsaturated fats. In the food, those rich in dietary fiber, plant stanols must be included. In case of overweight patients, weight reduction is included in the treatment.
