What are the primary categories of "special needs" inmates, and what specific accommodations are necessary for each to insure the safe and orderly operation of a correctional facility?
for cja 113
The four primary categories for the special needs are as follows:
Physical - This would include all the disabilities in the person which are present physically and people are able to see them. Either they are born with these physical disabilities or develop later at life. It would include allergies, asthma, leukemia, mascular dhstrophy etc. The accomodations one can make to accomodate such peope would be to create an environment where such people are welcome. Add stairs and left both for the people, so they could walk or can bring their wheelchair and feel included.
Developmental - These special needs are not physically present but are shown more into how our mind works. The development of the mind doesn't take place correctly and the person suffers from down syndrome, dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, visual processing disorder etc. To make these people feel included, give them opportunities in your organisation where they could work. Behave with them nicely and make them understand what is happening around instead of making fun would be a great help.
Behavioral/emotional - This would include all the disabilities a person develops according to their emotions and behaviours like obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress, depression, anxiety etc. The only remedy and solution for this is to talk. Make the person feel alive and happy again. Make such accomodations where the least stress is put onto them and communicate and share problems with them so that they could talk and share what they are going through.
Sensory-impaired - At last, this category would talk about all the disabilities that would happen in regard with your senses. It would include blindness, deaf or limited hearing, visually impaired. To accomodate with this, one can add braille language and use hand signs to make sure the person feels included and one can communicate with them so they could understand what you are talking about.
