Explain cognitive mapping and one other memory strategy
Cognitive mapping as defined is a type of mental representation which serves an individual to acquire, code, store, recall, and decode information about the relative locations and attributes of phenomena in their every day or the metaphorical spatial environment.
Introduced by Edward Tolman, it is a popular memory management technique is a semantic network of how data is acquired, analyzed, stored and retrieved in the human memory.
Cognitive mapping happens largely in the hippocampus part of the brain. This part integrates the spatial and non-spatial information aspects. Spatial is the information that is location or geography based and can be plotted in a graph. Non-spatial is the characteristics that can be expressed in images and multimedia such as height, weight, age etc.,
The cognitive map generation can be triggered by any of the senses such as vision, hearing, olfaction etc., Each memory is allocated spatially, based on the perception of the person experiencing it and is allocated a place in memory. There is a path integration done by grid cells which actually lead to the place of the memory when it is to be retrieved. It is almost as if one is looking for a place in real life using maps. Except, these maps are now in our brain and are only ours to use.
Another memory strategy - Repetition
Repetition is a very effective way of retaining information for retrieval when required. When any new skill is learned, it is important to keep practicing it over time in order for it to get into our long-term memory such that it comes to us subconsciously.
Riding a bike, playing an instrument, playing a sport are all examples of the need for repetition. Therefore, it is important to write about it, teach it to someone and think about it if it has to stay in the long-term memory.
Explain at least two positive effects of using each memory strategy in daily life. I
The two positive effects of using cognitive mapping are:
Improve information
retrieval: There is a neural pathway that has been set up,
so the memory is not clustered and missing among other information.
This makes it easy to retrieve data when required.
Instill a sense of
achievement: People who use memory techniques effectively
every day are able to perform better which improves self-esteem and
instills a sense of achievement in the person.
The two positive effects of repetition:
Better retention of information: By repeating the information, it is possible to retain information longer in memory. Information retained in long-term memory is easier to retrieve and therefore ensures better processing of information is possible.
Improves thinking & learning skills: When there is information readily available, it improves the way a person thinks. There are more perspectives and angles from which this data can be analyzed and thinking capability is therefore enhanced. It paves the way for better learning of new information."
