Ebbinghaus said that we tend to forget information (data) that is not consciously reviewed, over time. This means that if we learn something and do not make an effort to remember it, ove time, we will forget what we had learnt. To depict this, he made a forgetting curve. The forgetting curve shows the decline of memory if not retained, along time.
For example, we learn a new language in school for 2-3 years and revise it and write exams in that language. After passing out of school we do not use the language anymore and slowly what we have learnt fades from memory. Due to no retention, we gradually forget it. This explains the forgetting curve.
Another example would be learning phone numbers. If we have learnt our friend's phone number by heart and call them frequently but then stop making calls for some reason. After some time we will not remember the number because we have not retained it in our memory. This is how the forgetting curve works.
