One criticism of Piaget is that he underestimated the abilities of young children. One area in which Piaget underestimated the abilities of young children was in their attainment of object permanence.
b. At what age can children pass Piaget’s task and at what age can they pass Baillargeon’s task? 1 pt.
c. Why can children pass Baillargeon’s task before they can pass Piaget’s? 1 pt.
A. Please describe the task that Piaget used to measure object permanence and the newer task
(used by Baillargeon) to measure it.
b. At the sensory motor stage the child feels that the objects surrounding him exist independently. It is a type of mental perception and the child realizes why the objects exist there. At the age of 4 years the child passes to Baillargeon’s task. It is the stage of comprehension.
c. In the sensory motor stage the child comes to know about the various objects through senses like touch, eyes or hearing. He gathers knowledge about the existence of the things around him.
Then there grows schemas in the child. The mental image grows in the mind of the child and through the process of assimilation and accomodation child grows mental categories. Symbolic thought grows in the child and it improves language, imagination and memory skills.
With the help of the mental images the child finds similarity and difference between the things. From the stage of the concrete operational stage the child passes to the imagination and false belief. There grows false belief about the objects.
