Define and discuss the nature of rape myths and how they have impacted today's society.
Rape myths are stereotyped beliefs about sexual assault. They are often used to as tool against person who raped. They have the nature to justify male sexual aggression against females. It is said that only 2-8% of rapes of falsely reported. It includes things such as men are not the victims of rape, prostitutes can not be raped as it is their occupation, girls have the secret desire to get raped. Sexual assault is lust which can not be controlled.
These are nothing but age old beliefs that one is carrying. For eg: there can not be rape after marriage. These are the ideas that society is following and hence they are denying to accept that it is rape. It also differs from culture to culture. Some cultures where women have less power to raise the voice would not even accept that women is raped. Or where males are in power, would not accept that a male has been raped.
It is only when the light is focused on these issues, people become aware of them
