besides your immune system what other body systems are working to fight infection?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Immune system helps to prevent infections. There are various barrier functions thta helps to prevent the pathogen to enter in to the body. The different mode of barrier defenses are associated with the barrier function of the body, where the pathogens try to enter. The primary route that the microorganism enter is through the skin. The following table describes defence mechanism in the body.

SITE DEFENCE MECHANISM HOW PROTECTION OCCUR
SKIN EPIDERMAL SURFACE KERATINIZED CEL OF SURFACE,LANGERHANS CELLS
SKIN(SWEAT,SECREATIONS) SWEAT GLANDS,SEBACEOUS GLANDS LOW PH, WASHING ACTION
ORAL CAVITY SALIVARY GLANDS LYSOZYMES
STOMACH GASTEROINTESTINAL TRACT LOW PH,ACIDIC ACTION
MUCOSAL SURFACE MUCOSAL EPITHELIUM NON KERATINIZED EPITHELIAL CELLS
NORMAL FLORA(NON PATHOGENIC BACTERIA) MUCOSAL TISSUE PREVENT PATHOGENS FROM GROWING ON MUCOSAL SURFACE

IN SKIN IT CONTAINS DEAD KERATINIZED CELLS WHICH IS NOT SUITABLE FOR THE BACTERIAS TO GROW THUS DEFENCE MECHANISM WORKS.

BUT AS THE EPITHELIAL CELLS SHUDS THE MICROBES CAN GET IN EASILY,SO THE SWEAT GLAND PRODUCES SWEAT WHICH LOWERS THE PH OF THE ORGANISM,AND GLANDS PRODUCES TOXIC LIPIDS THAT PHYSICALY WASHES MICROBE AWAY.

NEXT IN THE MOUTH THE SALIVA WHICH PRODUCES LYSOZYME, AN ENZYME WHICH DESTROYS BACTERIA BY DIGESTING THEIR CELL WALLS.

ACIDIC ENVIRONMENT OF STOMACH WHICH IS FATAL TO MANY ORGANISM IS ALSO A BARRIER

MUCOUS LAYER OF GASTEROINTESTINAL TRACT,RESPIRATORY TRACT,NOSE,EYESAND EARS TRAPS BOTH MICROBES AND DEBRIS AND FACILITATES THERI REMOVAL.

IN UPPER RESOIRATORY TRACT, CILLIATED EPITHELIAL CELLS MOVES POTENTIALLY CONTAMINATED MUCOUS UPWARDS TO THE MOUTH, WHICH IS SWALLOWED TO DIGESTIVE TRACT AND REACTED BY THE ACIDIC ENVIRONMENT.

IF OUR BARRIER MECHANISM FAILS IN DEFENSING ,THE BODY RELEASES IMMUNE CELLS TO RESIST THE ATTACK OF MICROBES.
