Define: Differential continuity, Intra-individual variability, and Mean-level change.
Differential continuity: It is defined as stability of individuals’ personality characteristics within a group over time.
Intra-individual variability: It is defined as variability that is observed within the same person when they are assessed at different times or in different situations. Attention or effort are good examples of intra-individual variability.
Mean-level change: A mean-level change refers to an absolute change in the individual's level of a certain trait over time. Longitudinal research shows that mean-level change does occur. However, some traits tend to change while some traits tend to stay stable.
How do Continuity, Change, and Variability co-exist?
These coexist at certain age such as higher around age of 50 when person is in higher ages of adulthood. At this time, behavior or personality of person is stable (continuity) showing little mean-level changes and little variability.
How have your personality traits changed over time?
I am around 30. My personality traits are bit dynamic. I am still exploring a lot about myself. This has changed a lot of things in my personality. For example, I was earlier less attentive and less focused. But now I am becoming more attentive and focused on my life goals.
What about an older adult in your life – have you observed personality trait changes in these individuals?
My father is in age above 60. In his older adult life, he is quite stable. I see him relaxed doing things at his own pace, quite satisfied with life. I do not see any major personality trait changes in him.
