Q. Nowadays, many firms have become or more striving to become learning organizations. Discuss why firms recognize this practice is important for continuous performance-related training and development programs.
Provide detailed explanation.
Ans.- The term “learning organizations” was coined by Chris Argyris and popularized by Peter Senge who wrote a book on this subject called, "The Fifth Discipline." In simple words, learning organizations refers to a company that continuously changes itself and promotes the learning/training and development of its employees as per the need of the hour. A learning organization focuses on three key fronts i.e., knowledge creation through its business operations and experiences, retention of that knowledge in the organization and finally ensures the transfer of that knowledge among its employees. The promotion of learning culture in the organization is always beneficial for both the employees as well as the organization as this helps to combat the tough market competition and successfully sail through the strong wind of continuous market and technological changes.
Now coming to the second part of the question that why firms recognize this practice is important for continuous performance-related training and development programs? The arguments in favor of having a learning culture in the organization can be listed as follows-
· The promotion of organizational learning culture increases the productivity, efficiency of the employees which directly contributes to the exchequer of the organization.
· The employees of a learning organization are very much updated from the market trends which help them to change themselves accordingly and having an updated and flexible workforce is always advantageous for any organization.
· The culture of learning in the organization helps to create more responsible, knowledgeable, and confidant employees who possess tremendous leadership skills. This helps them in giving their best performance continuously in the organization which increases the job satisfaction of the employees and consequently decreases the turnover rate. All of these things, because of the learning culture, save a huge sum of money for the organization.
· An organization becomes more flexible/ready to react to the quick changes happening in the market through the promotion of organizational learning. It helps an organization and its employees to embrace the changes happening outside and utilize the opportunities offered by it.
These are some of the reasons why organizations are focussing on the organizational learning culture.
