Our personalities are a combination of both genes and
environmental factors. There is no one particular "personality gene"
we have since perosnality traits are complex. We might be born with
certain traits and temperaments but it does get shaped by our
social environment as well.
For example;people high in extraversion have been found to
carry long forms of the gene DRD4. This gene dictates how we
produce dopamine. Those who carry the long form of the gene DRD4
have more dopamine production when they have a positive experience.
In other words, high extroverts might be wired to seek more social
experiences because they get a bigger chemical pleasure boost.
For example,my mother has the talent of planning things all on
her own, which I feel has been passed on to me and forms a major
part of my personality.
Our experiences in our day to day life, as well as the people
whom we associated with such as our family, friends, people in the
school, in the church and the community as a whole, all influences
our personality.
My major personality development happened when I went to
college, and I got opportunities to join various extra curricular
societies which definitely made me more of an extrovert personality
and more confident and made me who I am today.
My friends and teachers also shaped my personality and made me
more open to experiences and face the world with better public
skills.
