Following the format of questions 1-5 above, you are to design a question regarding the role of “social media” (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.) in socialization [For example, you could study the postings of an “Instagram Influencer” and how their postings encourage (socialize) their followers into a certain way of thinking, acting, or feeling]. Then you are to answer the question you created. Remember the focus is to be on the role of social media in socialization. [Your grade is based on the quality of the question created and the response]

INSTRUCTOR'S SHORT SAMPLE (Students' narratives should be longer)

My conclusion is that capital punishment is wrong because of the following reasons. First reason: everybody involved in it suffers and nothing good is achieved. The guilty person suffers, his or her family suffers, the executioner suffers , and many others suffer too. Second reason, it presupposes that people who commit a serious crime could not be rehabilitated. That's a determinist view that is not supported by science. All of us have done at point something bad and then regret it and improve our lives through education and training.  Third reason, capital punishment amounts to cruel punishment. Although these fall short of providing a knock-down argument against capital punishment, they strongly suggest that it is wrong.

ARGUMENT RECONSTRUCTION

P1. Everybody involved in capital punished suffers.

P2. Nothing good is achieved with it.

P3. It presupposes that determinism is true

P4. Determinism is not true: people can improve

C1, Therefore, capital punishment is wrong.

Develop an analysis of one person’s experience or ‘case’ under COVID 19 (fictional or from your experience).Using an intersectional lens discuss how this person experiences the challenges of the pandemic based on the intersection of gender with different structures in their lives (i.e. race, class, sexuality, nationality, age, ability, etc.) In your discussion, be sure to identify their gender (male/female/non-binary, cis or trans, etc.) and discuss how their relative privilege or disadvantage in society differently impacts their life chances under the pandemic. (i.e. think about those who might not be able to leave their home and have limited funds such as single mothers, elderly, folks with disabilities, and many who are or are also immune-compromised, have recently lost their job, or are without shelter). Often, analyses of gender neglect other social structures. Discuss the limits of an analysis of gender that does not give attention to the other social structures impacting this person’s lived experience.

avid Berkowitz was known as the “Son of Sam”. He was a serial killer in the NYC area during the span of 1976-1977. Prior to his apprehension, the media coverage of the events were at a fever pitch. The newspapers, to some degree, sensationalized the events and aided in spreading a panic across the city. People were scared, curfews were observed and it made a significant social impact. This week, we’ll explore the effect of serial killers on society and on criminological policy. Address the following prompts:

•   What are the Son of Sam Laws and how did this case influence them? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_of_Sam_law)
•   In your opinion, what kind of social and psychological pressure/effects did these crimes have on the surrounding area? http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/07/nyregion/07sam.html?rref=collection/ti&_r=0)
•   What is “Rational Hedonism”? How does this contradict the actions of a serial killer? (http://www.rationalhedonism.org/ethics.html)
•   We know that formal and informal social controls keep society in check. For serial killers, do these “work”? Why/Why not?
