In the 2010 film wall street, money never sleeps, think about the character of Bretton James and the way he views business. In what ways is the concept of dehumanization reflected in his practices and beliefs? Also, think about the ways in which ways of life and values are depicted and represented in the film generally. Character Traits
related to Business:
1. Gekko's account of KZIs downward spiral being attributed to
Bretton's rumor about debt is a classic example of how ethical
practices in investment banking are near zero. This shows that
Bretton wants to win no matter how.
2. Bretton's handling of the Chinese investments for his own
profits and to save his own skin shows his callousness and
selfishness with which he approaches money.
3. Bretton secretly accepts a bailout by a Federal agency while he
should have had the morals to stand by his investment deals.
Dehumanization in Ways of Life & Values
1. The film depicts that people shall always be
self-centered
2. It shows that all people inherently are capable of being evil
when it comes to wealth
3. It shows how greed is a great motivator for doing immoral
activities
4. It shows how relationships are valued second to profits in this
cut throat world.
5. It also shows that we choose the person that we want to be,
irrespective of how the world views us.
Relevance of Dehumanization
1. We are indeed dehumanized in every part of our life. We are
seen as uses, income, bank balance and status - not as
humans.
2. The moment that someone's value is attached to the appearance of
a person - we are dehumanized.
3. Racism is a great example of dehumanization. We are not
respected as individuals.
4. The set up of corporate success is in itself a great example of
dehumanization. If one is burned out, the value that one brings in
is lost, so is the person's importance.
5. Dehumanization happens all around us and therefore it is indeed
relevant in today's life.
