Consider your behavior for the past two weeks and make a note of any or all of the following:
- Appointments or classes for which you were late or missed altogether
I was late to classes because I coud not find parking
- Slips of the tongue
I said something mean to my little sister when she frustrated me and I was stressed about school work
- Memory lapses
I saw something on TV that made me think of an awful past relationship I had.
- Any “accidents” you had
I was so hungry I skimmed reading the directions to frozen gardein meatballs and did not see that they needed to have sauce on top. My whole house was soon filled with smoke and it still smells awful almost 2 weeks later.
- Any jokes you heard and found amusing
Jokes that my little sister and dad told me this holiday weekend.
Analyze these everyday experiences with the idea they may reflect the contents of your unconscious mind. Summarize your conclusions from a Freudian perspective.

Explain and critically examine Hobbes’s account in chapter XXIX of the following five seditious opinions or “doctrines” that tend weaken or dissolve commonwealths: “That every private man is Judge of Good and Evill actions”; “that whatsoever a man does against his Conscience, is Sinne”; “That every private man has an absolute Propriety [i.e. a natural right to property] in his Goods; such, as excludeth the Right of the Soveraign”; “That the Soveraign Power may be divided.” What basic elements of his philosophy appear to support his conclusion that these doctrines are “seditious” (in a broad sense of “seditious” which means being harmful to political authority and social order)? Do you agree with these conclusions and the reasons he sets forth in Leviathan to support them? Explain why or why not, in your well-reasoned opinion. (<800 22 points)

The way you look can be attributed to your DNA or genetic make-up. However, if you have an accident and need plastic surgery that alters your looks. You might say that there was an environmental factor that affected your looks. Some feel that our behavioral traits are determined by nature; others feel that you learn your behavior which is determined or nurtured by those around you. Of the two theories, nature (genetic pre-programming) or nurture (the environment in which you were reared), which one do you believe makes the greatest impact on human behavior? Watch the TEDxUIUC - Gene Robinson - Solving the "Nature vs Nurture" Dilemma and discuss why you feel that nature or nurture has the greatest influence on our behavior.

From 1801-1812, Thomas Bruce, Lord Elgin bought from the Greek
government, sculptures that had adorned the Parthenon and
Acropolis. Lord Elgin found the sculptures lying on the ground
around the Parthenon, broken, dirty, and unprotected from the
elements. Lord Elgin moved the sculptures to England, restored
them, and they now are a premier exhibit at the British Museum in
London, England.
Today, the Greek government wants the sculptures back in Athens.
Should the British government give the sculpture back to the Greek
government? Why or why not? Should the Greek government “buy back”
the sculptures? Why or why not? In New York City, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art has an incredible collection of art and artifacts
from the ancient Egyptians. Should we give back our Egyptian
collection to the Egyptians? Why or why not? Use 100 to 200 words
to complete your answer and comment on at least two student’s
writings.

Students, to further our dynamic discussions look into the following questions. Do you think that in general it is easier for the influence of a bad situation to overcome the good intentions of individuals or easier for people of good intentions to overcome the influence of a bad situation? Why? As you reply to the initial postings of your classmates supplement some examples where a public situation influenced behavior on a large scale? Peer groups are often blamed for leading a person into temptation.
