Social Distribution of Health and Illness: Immigration What is the “Latino Paradox”? Why does this matter?...

Social Distribution of Health and Illness: Immigration What is the “Latino Paradox”? Why does this matter? After reading Derose et al (2007) article, why are immigrants considered a vulnerable population when it comes to health and health care? Please provide a minimum of two examples discussed in the article. Are immigrants eligible for public funded health care (Medicaid, Medicare)? Does this vary by immigration status (undocumented, naturalized citizens, legal residents, etc.)? How do you think this impacts immigrants’ health? Please look up the views, both for and against, funding healthcare for undocumented immigrants. Why are people arguing against this? Why are people arguing for this? Now that you have briefly researched this issue, it is important to start forming your own opinion of current debates. Do you think undocumented immigrants should have access to taxpayer-funded health care (Medicaid, Affordable Care Act, etc.)? Why or why not? Choose one immigrant population to research. This may either be by country of origin or immigration status (undocumented, documented, etc.). Research their experience of health. Which immigrant population did you decide to research? What are their physical health outcomes? What are their mental health outcomes? Do they experience any barriers to accessing or receiving health care in the U.S. (such as insurance, etc.)? Explain.

Social Distribution of Health and Illness: Race and Ethnicity After watching Williams’ Ted Talk: What was their main point(s)? What evidence did they mention to help support these main point(s)? What are your reactions to their talk? After watching Roberts’ Ted Talk: What is race-based medicine, according to Roberts’ talk? What is the problem with race-based medicine? What evidence did they mention to help support these main point(s)? What are your reactions to their talk? Last week you thought about how gender was a social construction, yet we still have inequalities within health by gender. Parallel to this, race is also a social construction. Race is often thought as having biological reasons for racial classifications. However, there is no research to support this. Sociologists and social scientists have researched and recognized a long history of trying to organize people based on skin color and physical appearance. However, this changes over time and meanings can vary depending on country and culture. Given race is also a social construct, answer the following: Do you believe we should be categorizing people in healthcare by race? What are the benefits and potential (intended or unintended) consequences of categorizing people (such as patients) by race in health? After reading Kasana’s article on Serena Williams: How did racism affect Serena Williams’ birth experience? What are your reactions after reading this article? Unfortunately, racism toward women of color is common and affects both pregnancies and giving birth. What are some solutions that a health care facility (hospital, community health center, etc.) and/or provider could implement? Do you trust your doctor to listen to you and take you seriously? How does your race and experiences with racism (or lack of) affect your answer? For this section of discussion, you will educate your peers on both the physical and mental health disparities for a racial or ethnic minority group. You may choose only one group to focus on. Please address the following: Which group you researched The physical health disparities and inequalities that affect this group The mental health disparities and inequalities that affect this group How does racism and/or ethnocentrism help influence these health outcomes for this group? Were you aware of these health disparities before doing this research?

In Chapter 16, Substance Abuse Disorders are discussed. Substance Abuse Disorders are prevalent in society. Among the medical community, addiction is considered a chronic disease, but this concept seems difficult for some to understand or believe. What is it about addiction, do you believe, that keeps it a taboo subject? Depending on your socio-cultural background (ladies taboo to date after being married why men it is not. homosexuality is taboo in my country NIGERIA) , you may have been brought up with certain beliefs about addicts and addiction. Reflect on the dominant beliefs of your society. Do these beliefs stigmatize addicts? How do the dominant beliefs in your society either help or hinder addicts from receiving treatment? If you have some experience with someone that you know, consider what you've witnessed and offer your thoughts.

Write a 1-2 page critically reflective essay. If you use any outside citations, be sure to cite them in APA format.

For your question,
