Urinary incontinence occurs from poor bladder control that may range from a slight loss of urine during coughing, sneezing etc to complete loss of urine resulting from inability to control urination.
There are certain barriers that could arise while assessing the urinary incontinence. It includes
Some clients may feel difficulty while discussing and exposing the genital areas to the health care workers. In such cases, the nurse will not receive the needed information while assessment of the condition.
Some clients will be very anxious about being exposed. Such patients will not reveal their condition while assessing.
Fear about the changes in body images will also acts as a barrier while assessing urinary incontinence.
Clients having impaired mobility such as bedridden or on wheel chair having urinary incontinence will not be able to reveal their condition . Such clients also acts as a barrier in assessing urinary incontinence.
For clients having conditions such as verbal aphasia will not be able to communicate their condition properly. So the nurse will not get all the necessary information from their part while assessing.
The nurse who is caring the patient's with urinary incontinence should maintain good interpersonal relationship and proper communication while assessment. This will reduce their anxiety and the clients will open up their mind regarding their condition.
