Urinary incontinence is one of the most chronic health problems and can be intractable and ongoing.
7.1) 68 year old Janice complaints of urge incontinence. Janice is a slow walker and uses a 4 wheeled walker for ambulation. Janice had a fall while trying to get to the toilet to urinate. 7.2) 82 year old Bob is under palliative care. Bob is bed bound. Bob has functional incontinence of urine and faeces. Urinary incontinence is the inability to control the urge of urination due to weakness of pelvic muscles .
1. Toileting aids are designed to make toileting easy and relaxing experience for those who have difficulty in toileting.
Toileting aids for janice are :-
- bariatric commode
- commode chair
- high and low back toilet seats
- freeway commode chair( wheelchair with attached commode)
- cushion commode
- portable commode
Measured to prevent fall are:-
- proper lighting of the room
- keep the alarm near by patient to be used in case of emergency
- keep the side rails up always
- keep the height of bed low
- floors of the room bathroom and washrooms should be dry always.
- washroom and bathroom should have side bars/rails to aid in walking.
2. Toileting aids for bed ridden patient Bob are:-
- use of diapers and provision of perineal care after every voiding movement
- use of beds with attached commode .
- changing position every two hours to avoid pressure ulcers
