How do diversity issues affect clinical psychology and what training issues affect the future of clinical psychology? |
Clinical psychology is the branch of psychology which deals with the assessment and treatment of mental illness, abnormal behavior, and psychiatric problems. The field concerns with the treatment of complex human problems.
Psychologists are aware of issues & respect cultural, individual, role differences, based on age, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, language, andsocioeconomic status and consider these factors while working on the issues.
The common issues facing Behavioral health practices :
1) Financing : Americans are not seeking mental health treatment due to lack of Health insurances.only 15% remain uninsured & one out of five adults with mental illness are not being able to get treatment due to the following reasons : a) lack of adequate insurance.b) lack of available providers c) lack of available treatment options 4) lack of funds to cover expenses.
2) Retaining Workers : Shortage of psychologist , aging work force.
Lack of training in management & leadership for the next generation of psychologist.
3) Keeping Clients Engaged : The health care practices need to interact with their clients & keep them engaged , make them to feel comfortable . clients want easy communications, access to appointment reminders
4) Reducing Stigma : A lot Americans resist seeking treatment because of the stigma attached to meantal health issues. . The myth that the mentally ill are violent persists, they blame that mass shooting is amental illness.
PART B ) TRAINNING ISSUES :Two clinical training issues that are relevant to the Delaware Project on Clinical Science Training are : (a) value of problem-based learning for training clinical students (b) Implications of the National Institute of Mental Health’s Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project.
Problem-based learning sets less emphasis on mastering procedures , applying existing solutions & more emphasis on learning how to identify problems , to design, implement, and assess solutions.
Berkeley,s tranning model states --the ways that clinical training would need to change to embrace associated opportunities & overcome potential obstacles. both issues are (a) the value of problem-based pedagogical approaches that prepare students to be creators, discoverers, assessors, and disseminators; (b) the importance of training students to play central and significant roles in future approaches to the assessment and treatment of mental illness.
