Introduction.

Lifelong learning in nursing is defined as a dynamic process, which encompasses both personal and professional life.

This learning process is also both formal and informal. Lifelong learning involves seeking and appreciating new worlds or ideas in order to gain a new perspective as well as questioning one's environment, knowledge, skills and interactions.

The most essential characteristics of a lifelong learner are reflection, questioning, enjoying learning, understanding the dynamic nature of knowledge, and engaging in learning by actively seeking learning opportunities.

Keeping the mind active is essential to both lifelong learning and being able to translate knowledge into the capacity to deliver high quality nursing care.

Nursing is one of the many professions that is changing rapidly in terms of complexity and the technology involved, and hence creating an expectation and culture of lifelong learning for nurses is therefore essential.”

A student nurse's biggest goals is to graduate, to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. That light represents the end of the struggle, a great accomplishment and a testament to all that she has learned preparing to be a nurse. She is ready to serve patients and communities in her hometown or anywhere in the world. And yet: Once she get her first job as a nurse, she’ll realize that her education is just beginning.

One of the best things about being nurses is that they never stop learning, ever. Healthcare is an evolving door of policy changes, new research, and new patients. Once the nurse steps into the hospital, clinic, or patient’s room, she begin building on a set of skills that will continue to grow throughout her career.

Technology is moving too fast to think otherwise, with in-service meetings to discuss new devices, drugs, and procedures as common as deliveries of fresh scrubs. If a new piece of equipment comes into the nurse's area, she has to learn it, she has no choice.

Often it’s the end-user of nurses lifelong learning is the patients and their families. who now demand answers from the nurses who provide their care.The consumer’s expectation and their knowledge forces [nurses]to go beyond just competency in order to be able to have an open, informed consent, educational discussion with them. ks challenge their physicians and nurses.

Conferences, seminars, webinars, and other learning milieus offer a wide variety of opportunities for ongoing learning. Many nurses pursue certification in nursing specialties, accumulating skills and experiences that lend themselves to new professional opportunities and specialized practice.

To conclude, Nursing knowledge isn’t just about book learning; most forms of nursing involve interaction with other human beings, so anything we learn about human life and love is just as important as tubes, syringes, blood gases, and cells.The curious nurse loves to learn for the sake of learning; the curious nurse brings her nursing thought process to multiple forms of learning and experience.Nurses should be curious. Learn and grow because you love it. Be a nursing sponge for experience, knowledge, and skill.
