• The recent change that I made personally is my career change. Being a graduate in Marketing and Business Development, I was working in an industrial waste management company that deals with the appropriate disposal of most of the industries’ hazardous waste in my region. I was in charge of a particular region and have to interact with the Safety Officers of the companies who are the customers of my company. These interactions increased my focus towards the industrial safety field and I pursued NEBOSH (A UK certification for the Safety Officers). I got few opportunities abroad as an HSE Officer and after gaining a few years of experience in the Health and Safety field, I wanted to increase my potential and attain more expertise. I left my job and started pursuing my Master’s degree in Industrial Safety. The change I took did not happen immediately as I have to do a lot of research and calculate the risks that will support financially during my education period.
• I feel that though it is hard for me to study and work part-time, it is a much-needed change that will surely reward me in the future. At times, during the initial stages, I doubted my decision because the people around me found it weird to go for a Master’s degree in a new field that is not related to my previous degree. After a few weeks, I got used to it and started focusing more on the objectives of my decision to achieve what I wanted.
• There was a negative economic impact on this decision because I was getting good pay in the foreign country that I was working. And leaving everything all of a sudden and returning to my home country was a tough decision that I took. Being a newly married, I have to take care of my wife as well and until I found the part-time job it was hard for me to manage. The situation somehow changed at least to a certain extent as the job I was working for was flexible in the work timings and the salary I received was sufficient to manage my education period.
• The educational impact was positive as it adds another degree to my career along with my Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Marketing. Knowledge through education will not be wasted at any time and improving education is always helpful especially in coping up with this tough and competitive environment.
