Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. Unfortunately, someone, or something, had left 13very large, very deep, boot-shaped depressions in their front yard. Each depression has a volume of 1 ft3(for a total volume to be filled with 13ft3). The Dursleys plan to angrily purchase 22 kg (total weight) bags of topsoil from a local store to fill the holes. Each bag of topsoil has a water content of 10%, a total unit weight of 80 pcf, a specific gravity of 2.35 (the soil contains organic matter which has lower specific gravity than mineral soil solids). During transport, you should assume the bags will spill in the back of the Dursley’s Vauxhall Vectra hatchback, therefore the soil will have a looser total unit weigh of 70 pcf with the same 10% water content during transport. Vauxhall Vectra has 16.9 ft3of trunk space. During compaction, the soil is wetted to a 20% gravimetric water content and compacted toa total unit weight of 120pcf (the Dursleys are furious about these holes and take out the anger on compacting soil). The work will be conducted on a Thursday. How many bags of topsoil will be needed to fill these holes?

The main project is : Buying a house.

▪       Explain briefly the life cycle phases of this project and the major elements in each phase.

▪       The work breakdown structure (WBS) answers the question, “What are you going to do?” in each phase. Provide a WBS that answers this question for each of the phases with at least 3 levels of hierarchical breakdown.

▪       Put these activities into a logical sequence. Translate your activities into key milestones. How might you evaluate/measure each of these milestones?

Please help. Thank you.

Ethics Engineering

Generally which is easier to justify?

a.Strong paternalism

b. Weak paternalism

c. Both are equal

d. None of the above

Weak paternalism. The paternalist overrides the decision-making powers of the recipient when there is reason to believe the recipient
is not able to exercise her moral agency effectively.

Strong paternalism. The paternalist overrides the decision-making powers of the recipient, even when there is no reason to believe the recipient is not exercising his or her moral agency effectively.

  1. You are the Construction Manager for the Design and Build Contractor (and PSCS) for a project involving the construction of a multi-screen cinema and retail complex.
    1. You have had safety concerns in relation to the appointed scaffolding company, over a three weeks period. The issues raising concern include scaffolds being handed over in an unsafe state (missing toe boards, inadequate bracing and ties), scaffold workers operating at height not being tied-off, poor housekeeping and storage of materials on-site. Outline your strategy for dealing with this situation.

A 50-ft 2x4 drilled shaft group was installed in subsoil conditions, ( 15-ft sand overlain a 25-ft medium clay, which is underlain by a thick over-consolidated clay shale). The drilled shafts are tipped in clay shale at 50-ft depth to support a heavy highway bridge pier. The shaft diameter is 36 inches and placed at a center-center spacing of 6 feet. The strength properties of soils are 37ofriction angle for the sand with unit weight of 125 pcf, undrained shear strength of medium clay is 1,800 psf with unit weight of 130 pcf and the undrained shear strength of the heavily over-consolidated clay shale 3,000 psf with the unit weight of 140 pcf. Compute the design bearing capacity of the drilled shaft group with the factor of safety 2.5.

Note: When you suspect some missing information, please make reasonable assumption(s) and proceed with your solution. Clearly show why the assumption(s) is needed.

A 1000- MW power plant burns coalwith a heating value of 25000Btu/kg, a sulfur content of 2.1%, and an ash content of 8%.

The plant has an overall conversion efficiency of 30%. Calculate:

a. The coal consumption rate in tons/hour.

b. The ash generation rate in tons/hour.

c. If a wet scrubber is added to remove 98% of the SO2, find the CaO consumption rate, also in tons/hour.

1W = 3.411Btu/hr
1hp = 746W = 2545 Btu/hr
Molecular weights: S = 32 gr, H = 1 gr, and O = 16gr, and Ca = 40gr
