Conflicts may arise due to various factors and reasons, viz, ineffective communication system, misunderstanding, diversity, difference in attitudes, behaviour, resources distribution, power, and other. Conflicting situation may become functional or dysfunctional. It is very important to resolve conflicts and to convert it to more functional for enhancing the positive environment and healthy competition.
There are various strategies/methods to resolve conflicts:
Effective conflict resolution techniques are:
* Collaborative: this is the most effective and more positive approach to manage conflicts. In this technique, both the conflicting parties are allowed to have a say and discuss their problems. Interest of both the parties are taken into account and a common solution is created to satisfy their needs. It creates win-win situation.
* Competitive: this technique works when one party is powerful over the other, and it is necessary to bring some changes at any costs for the betterment. It creates win-lose situation. It is useful when resources and time constraints are present.
* Compromising: this technique involves giving up certain conditions or compromising some of the needs of both the parties to resolve and get back to normal work life. It demands assertiveness and cooperation to resolve any conflicting situation.
* Accommodating: in this technique one person gives up his interest to resolve and close the discussion. It may not be cooperative, but mere assertive. It is suitable for situation where losing a fight is necessary to retain some relationships and deals. But, not always effective.
* Avoiding: avoiding the conflicts might be a good method for certain situations, but it should be used depending on the seriousness of the conflicts.
Ineffective conflict resolution techniques:
* No action: this technique is ineffective because, taking No Action may worsen the situation and create more negative consequences.
* Hiding the things and being secretive: when the important information is hidden and some members are secretive, this might create more bad situations, once other members discover it.
* Not resolving conflicts due to financial reasons, amount of time, money and effort it requires provide low probable positive outcome.
* Damaging the image of other person and defaming them.
* Internationally delaying the resolution processes.
