Q. Quality Circles enrich work life. Discuss.
Answer.
Quality Circles- A group of employees (usually 3 to 12) with related jobs meet on a regular basis to identify, analyze, improve and control the work-related issues or challenges. A facilitator (supervisor) is present to ensure such meetings are productive and positive. Employees discuss the issues or challenges during such meetings and try to come out with some solutions. These solutions are shared with management and if approved then the quality circles implement the changes.
How Quality Circles Enrich Life- In a circle, all points on the boundary are equal in terms of their distance from the center. In a similar manner, a quality circle is a group of employees who have equal opportunity to enrich their work-life by improving the tasks, activities or processes they are part of, in their professional life. It is a path that transcends the employees from cribbing about things they dislike in their jobs to a path that can bring meaningful changes to make their work experience enjoyable, effective and efficient. For example, employees in small groups during breaks in office hours discuss and crib about things they are not happy about. It could be because the formal channel to share their concerns with management is missing or the employees are scared to share their viewpoints. Quality Circles provide such employees the medium, freedom, and opportunity to contribute with their viewpoints in a structured and unrestricted environment. These employees not only feel to be heard but also derive a sense of achievement when their suggestions or viewpoints are used to make working environments better for the company and for the employees.
Quality Circles if hinged on flexibility, creativity, and productivity can benefit the company elevate the morale of employees.
Flexibility for employees to use any technique deemed suitable by them like brainstorming, fishbone diagrams for cause and effect relationship, etc. Management does not put outcome-based restrictions on quality circle meetings but is ready to listen and consider for approval, any meaningful change suggested to them by the quality circles.
Employees even in case of monotonous jobs get an opportunity to think creatively with the group and lead to something that did not exist before in the system. For example, these employees might use improvements done by them using quality circles to motivate new employees. Such stories can be highlighted by management during events to make employees feel inclusive in the change story of the company.
Employees with a feeling of being heard and contributing to the company beyond their fixed tasks have higher chances of being motivated than those who feel otherwise. Such motivated employees tend to perform better and have higher productivity in their main job-related tasks as well. For example, if an employee during his/her job-related work finds something which makes him/her less productive then the employee has a channel to discuss and find a solution.
