Two of the most effective treatments for major depressive disorder are cognitive behavior therapy and antidepressant medications. Research has shown that cognitive behavior therapy to be the most effective, even more than the antidepressant medications. CBT teaches the pateints to recognize their own thoughts and cognitive diostortion which may be leading them to negative view about themselves and the world. Also, research has suggested that in moderate to severe depression CBT has been proved to the most effective.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most common form of antideprresants used in the treatment of major depression as they have fever side effects and more effective. Research on SSRI's has shown this treatment to be very effectve in treating major depression with reducing 50 percent of the symptoms of depression. In adolesence, if anti depressants are prescribed then CBT also has to be done in conjunction to have the best results.
