Here is the explanation of the Decision Support
System & its benefits to decision-makers with
examples:
DSS is an information system which provides the much-needed
information & support to various business aspects where the
decision making is directly related to the organisation.
- The decision support system helps to support the management,
operations & the overall planning levels at the mid & high
level.
- It also helps people to make decisions about issues that are
dynamic & rapidly changing.
- If the things are not clear, lack of structure & in
cases of semi-structured decisions the system helps to give
information & support.
- The support system is fully automated, computerised,
human-powered and can also be the combination of both.
Benefits:
- It helps to solve issues which are not structured properly when
the problems are not clear and if the problems are focused more on
upper-level managers.
- It will try to combine the use of models & techniques along
with traditional data access functions.
- It helps the people who are not proficient with the computer in
an interactive form.
- It focuses on flexibility & adaptability so that changes
can be accommodated in the environment.
Examples -
- It helps to provide information regarding inventories of the
assets related to information like data sources, warehouses of
data, data marts and others.
- Another example would include giving comparative revenue &
sales figures between the different periods.
- Example - If the sales team is using sales
assumptions and those product sales assumptions can give projected
revenue value the DSS.
DSS can be used in the management and development of complex
anti-corruption and anti-terror systems. To verify the credit
history of the loan application DSS can be used as well is another
example.
