Let us understand what typology related to organizational
culture is given by Cameron and Quinn. According to them, the
organizational culture is divided into four parts, plotted on the
four quadrants with flexibility and discretion on one axis and
stability and control on the other axis. The four types of
organizational culture identified are:
- Clan culture: this type of culture focuses
mainly on mentorship and teamwork. Focus is laid on to the people
and integrated work environment exists. The workplace is
collaborative and open communication is very much given importance.
Organizations following such culture are action oriented and always
look for a change, and accepts it with high flexibility. As a
result the employee engagement increases and with an adaptive
environment the risk taking ability increases. Such cultures are
found in startups and small companies.
- Adhocracy culture: in this type of culture the
primary focus is towards risk taking and innovating in a different
manner. Such companies are always seeking growth and value
individuality by encouraging innovative thinking and brings up
creative ideas for development. They focus more on external factors
and differentiation category. This results into high profits and
good brand image. Companies like Facebook and Apple are involved in
following this type of culture.
- Market culture: such companies focus on
competition and growth. Such culture focuses on profitability and
each position/ job role is given importance in the organization.
Such organizations focus towards results and look for external
success and not internal satisfaction.
- Hierarchy culture: companies following this
culture follow traditional corporate culture and are focused on
internal satisfaction and follows strict hierarchy level. The
structure is rigid with rules and regulations, which cannot be
ignored. For such companies it becomes difficult to reach to their
goals as there is lack of employee satisfaction.
From the above discussion, it is easily clear that Apple company
follows Adhocracy culture as the main focus of the
company is to develop and grow with high level of innovation.
Moreover, the company is a risk taker and aims at ruling the market
with its creativity and differentiation in ideas. The ideas are
brain stormed on regular basis and every employee is given a chance
to speak out his mind. Above all the company focuses on doing new
all the time which has not been practiced by any other organization
in the market.
