What do you think is the most important / groundbreaking of technological developments that have led to the current state of computing and communications revolution?
Why?
Also, do you think the development you have identified would have been possible without other important (also, groundbreaking?) developments? If not, would those other developments be more important?!
There are many technological developments that led to the computing and communications revolution. It all had already started when Arpanet was expanded as a means fo sharing computing resources. After that, the development of integrated networking, local area networks, etc. led to the revolution of computing and communication.
Arpanet expansion:
ARPANET project evolved in unanticipated directions. During this time, Telnet was also developed which led to the development of FTP or file transfer protocol. It helped in enabling users of different systems to share files.
Network (Internet):
When the satellite networks and packet radio evolution came, there were means developed to connect these networks. It gave birth to the Internet.
Integrated networking:
Computers used in integrated networking were time-sharing machines that were used to support a number of users at the same time. The standardization using DEC and Tenes enabled various sites to shared different kinds of software. After some time standards and management equipment and policies were made.
The computing and communication revolution resulted from shifting gears from analog technology to digital technology. It included the adoption of digital computers, proliferation fo digital record-keeping, etc.
The developments would not have been possible without other developments.
This is because the previous developments offered a foundation for the upcoming developments. Without a doubt, the other developments were important. However, it also depends on the era one is living in.
Software working on one single computer is not the same as with a high degree of interaction with a number of human beings. It gave rise to the requirement of new types of technologies. Experts initially would not have anticipated remotely that the technology created initially would be led to a transformation in the future.
