Definitions of Health:

  • The states of being free from illness or injury.
  • A person's mental or physical condition.
  • A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Health care interventions and a person's surroundings are two important dimensions that must be in an individual's life for good health. Other such factors that aid health are namely:

  • their lifestyle
  • background
  • economic and social conditions
  • their spirituality
  • Income and social status
  • Social support networks
  • Education and literacy
  • Employment/working conditions
  • Social environments
  • Physical environments
  • Personal health practices and coping skills
  • Healthy child development
  • Biology and genetics
  • Health care services
  • Gender
  • Culture

Apart from knowing these, it is important that a person can handle the daily stresses of their life. Stress is known to produce cortisol in the brain and body which hampers with an individual's daily basic functioning in needed areas of their life.

Key determinants of an individual's health:

  • Lifestyle: Decisions over which the individual has control. How one makes choices most directly affects how they live. They can choose habits and practice acts. These acts are usually the small causes of whether a person will live healthily or in sickness most times.
  • Environmental: This refers to all of the things related to a person's health that is overt or external. A person cannot control their environment but it is possible to some extent when there are financial and economic gains that can help them make choices to change some things about their environment for a better lifestyle. (Nurture)
  • Biomedical: The physical and mental aspects, developed within the human body as influenced by genetic make-up. (Nature)

A combination of physical, mental, and social well-being, together is referred to as a health triangle. Those who can keep track and manage the three are most definitely in for good health in the long term keeping physical and mental illnesses away while making sure that they are financially stable to bounce back on rainy days. Public health care systems would be the most beneficial overall for individuals or citizens as it would make sure that all the basic needs are attained making it even more helpful if not beneficial for governments that run such policies. Canada is a great example of this. Access to education is also a very important part that is beneficial to all. A good education is crucial for young individuals to make space for their future aspirations.

Personal: For me, health has been a major point of focus since the age of 17 as I was quite a weak and anemic child. I decided that its the last straw and made up my mind to follow a strict and helpful regime and routine for my health. My goal was to become stronger and fitter as well while eating clean and doing things that are good for me long term. I too, have been interested and have been following mental and physical health-related things and I have found a clean diet and yoga to be especially elevating in all areas of my life so far. They keep me sane and grounded while getting ready for tough times with resilience.

Professional: On the professional side I have noticed that a work-life balance is very much needed. Yes, being productive is very useful in today's overworking and not paid enough world but a person who can navigate their way around this can most definitely find a space where there is space for a personal life as well as a work-life in their careers.

Community: For this one, people do better when they are self-contained and healthy first only then can they add to the external world which involves their cultural traditions and other communities directly. Volunteering is an active act of people's altruism element and this should occur more as the world always could use some genuine humanity. Differences always seem to be the mid-ground in people's battlespaces where race, gender, ego, pride, vice, etc are debated and done on the sidelines. Social justice and law stand for equality and individuals who manage to reach peak health and prosperity or even wealth are usually the ones who can fulfill their self actualizing needs for humanity well.

Academic: Students are all over the world struggle with finding their self-control. It is a time in their lives where they can make the most of their personal and professional growth. Many struggle with peer pressures to drink and do drugs while others struggle to socialize and get themselves out there. What students do need is an environment that helps them nurture themselves apart from their school and college campuses. Finding a strong moral support system is key to surviving these years for a young student.
