Answer

While one’s biological family is inherited, marriage creates a family that is uniquely chosen. While individuals may enter into marriage with starry eyes and butterflies, marital satisfaction tends to ebb and flow throughout the various stages of marriage. On the bright side, many middle-aged couples report higher levels of well-being, social integration, and overall life satisfaction when compared to people who are widowed, divorced, or single. As adults reach the stage of empty nesting, many relationships improve, as time and finances are often spent on one’s partner rather than on caring for one’s children. However, financial stressors and life crises can still have devastating effects on relationships that are mature. The steps to achieving marital satisfaction are no secret, and they often involve setting realistic expectations of one another, keeping a positive perspective, continuing to practice the art of compromise, and maintaining open communication. Most couples would agree that commitment — which is one of Sternberg’s (1986) aspects of love — is key to having healthy, happy relationships that endure the test of time.
