Give two phenomenological research methods that emerged from the phenomenological philosophy of Heidegger.
According to the philosopher Martin Heidegger, knowing the truth about ‘ Dasein’ or the being in the world involves exploring the to interpretation of truth by the being who comes to know the world first and foremost through his/her own experiences. So, a method for knowing about the nature of the being is to describe the interpretations generated by this being. Thus Heidegger set out to delineate two phenomenological derived methods for research:
Descriptive phenomenology: This method was propagated by Edmund Husser for who means phenomenology was about generating a ‘pure’ description of the experiences of concepts or phenomena as people experience them. The Here, the descriptions are used as written phrases or statements that represent the meaning that are attributed by the participant to his/her own experiences.
Hermeneutic phenomenology: this is a type of interpretative phenomenology itslef where the focus is to examine the text, to reflect on the content to discover something meaningful. Here one isolates the experience into distinct ‘themes’, and then rewrites the theme while interpreting the meaning of the phenomenon or lived experience
