Order: Give 1000 mL D5 1/2 NS over 6 hours. Which bag will you choose: D5.9%, NaCI D5.45% NaCI, D5.225% NaCI. Hang the IV using a gravity system. Tubing has a drop factor of 10gtts /mL. Set gravity drip at_____?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given

Order :D5 1/2 NS

Volume :1000ml

Time:6 hours

Drop factor :10gtt/ml

Flow rate=Total volume *Drop factor/ Time(hr)*60

=1000*10/6*60

=1000/6*6(60 is divisible by 10 ,six times)

=1000/36

=27.7 or 28

The gravity drop has to be set at 28 drops/min

D5. 9%= Dextrose 5% , 0.9% NS

D5.45%= Dextrose 5%, 1/2NS (the patient is prescribed half strength NS so this has to be chosen )

D5.225%=Dextrose 5%, 0.225%NS

The bag to be chosen is D5. 45%NaCl
