Calculate the flow rate:
a. 1000 ml D5W, infuse over 8 hours: ______________________
b. 1000 ml 0.9% NaCl, infuse over 12 hours: _____________________
c. 500 ml 0.45% NaCl, infuse over 6 hours_________________________
1. FLOW RATE CALCULATION
Flow rate = Total volume (ml) / Time in hours
a. Volume of D5W = 1000ml
Time = 8 hours
Flow rate = 1000/8 = 125ml/hour.
b. Volume of 0.9% NaCl = 1000ml
Time = 12 hours
Flow rate = 1000/12 = 83.3 = 83ml/hour
c. Volume of 0.45% NaCl = 500ml
time = 6 hours
Flow rate = 500/6 = 83.3 = 83ml/hour
2. DRIP RATE CALCULATION
Drip rate = Total volume (ml) / Time in minutes x drop factor
a. Volume of Ringer Lactate = 100ml
Time = 1 hour 1 x 60 = 60 minutes
Drop factor = 15gtt/ml
Drip rate = 100 / 60 x 15 = 25gtt/min
b. IT CAN BE SOLVED IN TWO WAYS:
1) Volume of D5W = 75ml, Time = 1 hour (1 x 60 = 60min), drop factor = 10 Drip rate = 75 / 60 x 10 = 12.5gtt/min = 13gtt/min
2) Volume of D5W 500ml
Here we have to calculate infusion time. Infusion time = Total volume (ml) / Flow rate(ml/hour) = 500 / 75 = 6.6 hours = 6.6 x 60 = 396min Substitute this in the drip rate formula, Drip rate = 500 / 396 x 10 = 12.6 = 13gtt/min
c. Volume of 0.9% Normal Saline = 1000ml
Time = 1000 / 60 = 16.6 hours = 996 minutes
Drop factor = 60gtt/ml
Drip rate = 1000 / 996 x 60 = 60 gtt/min
This can be calculated by the other way also which I have mentioned in the previous question.
