A good place to start with an internal firm analysis is to catalog the assests a firm has. List the firms's tangible assets. Then make a separate list of its intangible assets.
The firm I have selected for the study is Zee Entertainment
Limited. Zee is a leading Indian Broadcast Aggregator and Content
production company. It is a part of Essel group and has varied
interest in television, print, internet, OTT and theater
business.
On looking closer at the internal resources, the organization is
divided into multiple layers.
In the current Structure, the CEO- Chief Executive Officer heads
the management board, and the CBO –Chief Business Officer and CSO-
Chief Strategy Officer reports to him.
The role of strategy office is highly important since it ensures
that the activities and initiatives being undertaken are in line
with the vision, mission, short term and long terms plans for the
organization and the group companies.
The Chief Business Officer heads the daily operations and is
responsible to ensure the P&L flow through the organization.
The sales team, marketing team, operations, finance, IT and
Programming team report to the CBO.
The core competencies and capabilities of the organization include
the following:
1. Programming
2. Market research
3. Post production
4. Audio engineering and Mixing
5. Broadcast delivery
6. OTT platform content creation
Taking a closer look at the value chain: the content gets created
at various production houses across Mumbai and the same is shared
to Zee Head Office. The team does quality control checks and passes
the data for broadcast. This is the supply chain for television
content. The programming team gives input to the production houses
weeks in advance to sync with the overall direction the program is
heading to. After getting the content, for OTT platform the
programming team identifies the key highlight areas and cuts the 20
min long television content to 5 min long OTT content with same
highlights being covered in both areas. The value chain in this
case focuses on ensuring maximum returns on the content once
produced. They also do audio mixing and dubbing and pass the same
content to other countries via different broadcasters. Such
syndication activities gets huge revenue. The business model in
Zee`s case is to get maximum returns as possible from single source
of content.
The major assets Zee has at the moment include:
1. Dedicated Post Production facility with in house capacity of 500
editors
2. Dedicated audio engineering facility with dedicated audio
engineers
3. Dedicated broadcast centers
4. Dedicated OTT cloud server
5. Digital asset management system
6. Cloud based IT infrastructure for big data analysis and market
research data
