A very important aspect of a team building is collaboration vs competition.

Collaboration is when team members work in collaboration with each other and generate results out of team synergy. Team synergy is shown when the effect (output) of effort is greater than the effort made. A team is meant as a group of people who derive results which exceed the sum of individual efforts of the members of the team. Collaboration is an aspect of the team which has a positive influence on the team performance. The members which collaborate and help each other without being asked for it make an excellent team. While working on a project submission for my MBA, the team members of my team demonstrated a high level of collaboration. It was so evident and good that even though we were behind the schedule and submitted our work on last minute, all the members were willing to help each other in their tasks. Finally, we were able to present the project well an scored above average.

Competition is another aspect which members of a team exhibit in their behaviour. It is an act of one person acting in such a way that he derives benefit for himself and not for the whole team. This type of behaviour is seen in members who separate themselves from the team and work in isolation. For a team as a whole, competition among members is a negative aspect and can pull the results down. In this case, the team shall only be a group of members working for a common goal, while fulfilling their individual responsibilities in isolation. In the college annual event, one of the members of our team was only interested in competing for his responsibilities and then leaving to chill out. Despite asking for help many times, he only focused on his work. Neither did he ask for help nor helped anyone. Finally, at the demonstration time, he fell short of preparation and our team was disqualified for lack of team synergy.

Teams which have internal competition always fall behind the teams which have a collaborative culture.
