Given that the functional theory focuses on
decision-making and problem-solving
groups, why is its silence on relationship issues a
problem?
The functional perspective is a normative approach to describing and predicting group performance that focuses on the functions of inputs and/or processes. The aim of theory and research from this perspective is to understand why some groups are successful and others are not. Theory guided by the functional perspective, the group dynamics literature is filled with lessons for how group composition, structure, task-related goals, and interaction processes influence the effectiveness of groups and organizations. The functional perspective consists of a set of theories with a family resemblance in how they view and examine groups and with a common set of underlying assumptions. Issues regarding the quality of teamwork and those factors that contribute to it or detract from it compose the functional perspective.
The theory has no say in matter of relationship is because- relationships are a non-normative approach, as in, they are not predictible and there can be no assumptions made in terms relationships. roup dynamics however can be predicted and can said to be same in terms of workplace or social scenarios.
Relationship however are volatile in nature they vary from person to person perspectives.
