  • Functional Theory of Communication attempts to explain how and why communication is related to the quality of the decisions groups make. It is also known as the Functional Group Communications theory.
  • The Theory is based on the assumption that decision making effectiveness is not affected by the production of certain communicative behaviors but how the requirements are fulfilled by each member for a successful task completion.
  • This theory focuses upon the quality of decision making in groups. So whether the group is new or old,what matters is how the members of the group makee good quality decisions.
  • It is concerned with the results or outcomes of group behaviors and structures. Communication is seen as tool that helps group members by promoting rational judgments and critical thinking, as well as preventing group members from faulty decision-making and flawed problem solving.
  • As long as the new groups formed are small,this theory will be effectively applied. Smaller the new group better would be the focus on communication to make quality decisions.
