2) Analyze and assess a disaster scenario and apply SALT triage for your selected threat scenario (i.e., Hurricane Katrina). Alternatively, you can discuss a scenario from your community where SALT was used.
Please answer each portion of the questions above for a minimum of 500 words.
answer-
1) Describe the process of SALT triage method of lifesaving interventions.
when a mass casuality incident hits cause of natural disasters or other form of disaters where chances of having casualties are very high then many health & governement agencies come togther to incorporate a triage called SALT triage method in mass casuality situations. in this method, SALT refers to sort, assess, life-saving interventions, treatment and/or transport. The heart of SALT is the idea that providers focus on the prioritized movement of patients away from the incident that is making more patients and towards safety and the resources to care for them
the process includes-
sorting- Rapidly prioritize the patients using global sorting. This will help efficiently assess, administer lifesaving interventions and ultimately treat and transport the patients.this can be done by an announcement by public address system or loudspeaker.
assessment and Life saving intervention- in this step, both assessment & life saving intervention go together .SALT members or doctors or medical assistant does not have the too much time to assess the patient' situation in mass casuality incidents. they should make quick decision in life saving intervention like YES or NO.
for example- If a patient’s airway is closed, open it. If that patient is a child or infant, consider giving them two breaths or if you find that a patient has massive hemorrhage, provide rapid bleeding control with a tourniquet
in this step patients are taged on the basis of priority & chances of being saved.
like
treatment & transpot- after taging the patient in SALT process, those patients are moved forward.Patients continue to move forward from there to a treatment area and eventually to an ambulance for transport to a receiving facility.
