suggest a method for demonstrating the paramagnetic behaviour of the purple [Ph3PCH2C6H4CH2PPh3][ON(SO3)2] salt and the diamagnetic behaviour of the orange Fremys salt
The magnetic susceptibility can be measured by using Guoy method. Paramagnetic species are attracted to a magnetic field and diamagnetic species are repelled by a magnetic field so it measure the force exerted on a material as it is attracted to or repelled by the magnet.
The Gouy balance detects the apparent change in the mass of the sample as it is repelled or attracted by the region of high magnetic field between the poles. There are two magnetic poles where sample is suspended. The instruent give two seprate readings. Initially reading is performed on the sample of interest without a magnetic field. A subsequent balance reading is taken with an applied magnetic field. The apparent change in mass from the two readings is the result of magnetic force on the sample.
