a real life example of either Emotional Intelligence at work or the lack of it on display, from social media comments and current situations news.Make sure you describe your example in detail and connect it clearly to Goleman's emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence was the term used by a research student Wayne Leon Payne for the first time in an academic field. It was later used by John Mayer and Peter Salovey in 1990 for their research work to scientifically prove a person's ability in and around their emotions. They titled one of their research work emotional intelligence that was later on used by Daniel Goleman who is an author and science journalist he used this term for his research work According to his findings emotional intelligence is human ability to understand and manage his emotions, to understand and manage emotions of others around us. Emotions precede our behavior so one must recognize and control his emotions.
Emotional intelligence is a psychological theory that means it is a science of mind and behavior. To be aware of emotions one has to have the following skills:
1. The self-awareness that would enable one to understand and control his emotions,
2. Self-regulation: it is an ability that would help in redirecting the impulsive emotions and moods before taking an action; it gives way to openness, trustworthiness, and integrity.
3. Internal motivation: It is an ability to have joy in doing something and immersed in work and do the work with persistence and devotions to bring better external rewards.
4. Empathy: This makes one understand and recognize other's emotions by listening to them and being sensitive to other's feelings.
5. Social skill: It is an understanding to build common ground and rapport with our fellow people.
Social media becomes a source of information besides mainstream media. On many occasions, it is found that mainstream media becomes the mouthpiece of government or they are controlled by the ruler like in China where news and many channels are banned or censored.
Emotional intelligence is a skill that makes one aware of understanding and controlling his behavior and impulsive moods. Emotional intelligence is a skill one can learn through experience.
The current situation news throughout the world is almost commonly revolving around COVID19 and how to control it. The researchers are busy developing vaccines to fight this man-made disease. During this pandemic, we have observed different types of news on the media. Where the developed countries and underdeveloped countries are both seem to be fighting with the disease. As the developed countries have the means they are comfortable fighting the disease but the poor countries are lacking behind.
The current news that was most disturbing was from India where thousands of people from the labor class were made to travel barefooted, hungry and without food for thousands of miles because they did not have shelter at the place they were working, they had no money, and no means to continue to stay where they were working at the time of sudden lockdown. They had to move out from that place to native places, as there were no means of transport made available to them they were walking on the road, railway tracks by foot to reach thousands of miles away to their native place. Many people died on the way due to accidents, starvation, or thirst. This news was displayed on TV across the world but political leaders were least bothered they did not understand the emotions and needs of poor people, there was no empathy and help. The media news was more focused on playing a discriminative role instead of helping the needy there more involved in naming the disease relating to a particular religious minority. The result came as attacking the people from minority groups by dominant groups, they were not given admission in the hospitals and doctors played a very insensitive role during that period towards poor people and religious minority groups.
They showed there was a lack of emotional intelligence, instead of being helpful and empathetic the media played a negative role in spreading hate and discrimination. They had acted more on their emotions instead of diverting it towards productive needs they used it in playing with the emotions of other people without remorse. There was a lack clearly understood by the mood of the media. There was no common ground and rapport between the media, religious minorities, and poor people.
A media that can use itself for propagating peace and comfort by channelizing the emotions of others, when acts under the influence of capitalist people it lacks emotional intelligence, their propaganda becomes goal-oriented to benefit the interested parties.
