17. Under what situations would asexual organisms have an advantage over sexually reproducing organisms?

17. Under what situations would asexual organisms have an advantage over sexually reproducing organisms? Why is asexual reproduction better than sexual reproduction in these circumstances?

18. Based on the graph below, is this an organism where the female or male is the limiting sex? Explain why you chose your answer. What can you tell us about this organism, based on this information?

Expert Solution

17) the sexual reproduction creates genetic recombination's which leads to variation and diversity in the population and improves the servivality of the population, but if the cost of investment in sexual reproduction is high in a population than the benefit out of it, than the species tends to reproduce asexually. Asexual reproduction involves only one gender of species and make its identical copies in high number under favorable conditions. This process is much cost effective process for creating offspring than sexual reproduction.

The population which has unbalance in sex ratio generally prefers asexual reproduction. It mostly occurs in insects plants but not frequently observed in higher animals.

18) According to the given graph above the female is the limiting sex in the population. That means number of female are reducing with increase in number of mates (sexual partners). The limiting sex is the one which is less in the number (availability) than the other. Hence number of female here will be the limiting sex whivh decide the rate population growth.
