Describe some of the ways on which non-sway building frames are likely to undergo failure. Please include references.
Non sway frames are structurally stable in nature they tend to fail when :
a) Asymmetrical loading or the unbalanced load : Load causing unbalancing in the frame and it can make beahave a non sway frame like a sway frame and any displacement results into failure.
b) In plane horizontal load or force :
In plane horizontal force causes uneveness in the structure and makes it sway and ultimate in plane loads can also lead to failure.
c) Siesmic loading : All the structures now a days are designed for the siesmic loadings but a earthquake of a high intensity propagates energy in all the directions of the structure in the form of displacements and acceleration components makes the frames inelastic and hence failure.
d) Reversal of stress : By the change the air direction and variations in temperature and due to various natural flaws reversal of stresses in the frame members can be there and as non sway frames are rigid any member can fail by the time.
