Regarding the criminal justice system could someone discuss in detail two major topics; the police and the various types of punishment that support the criminal justice system?
Police and various punishments that are ensured by the law make sure that offenders are punished or future offenders are prevented from involving in a crime. These two set-ups help the judges and the criminal justice system function smoothly.
Police department is one of the most important forces that any country could have in order to maintain peace in the society as they act as the guardians of the law by taking care of the local crime, criminals and safety and security of the public in their respective regions. They deter future crimes by constantly searching and patrolling the public and at times private places. They bring all the offenders to the court and take them back to the prison or execute any other verdict that the court gives. They are in the execution part of the constitution.
There are five major punishments that are prevalent or could be sanctioned by the judges to an offender such as retribution, incapacitation, deterrence, rehabilitation and restoration.
Retribution which is just a kind of retaliation by law on behalf of the victim where the offender is sanctioned a punishment that fits their crime.
Incapacitation is simply locking the person inside a prison for certain number of days, months or years depending on the severity of the crime.
Deterrence is about preventing the possible crimes and criminals. This is done through patrolling and searches.
Rehabilitation is where the offender is given a chance to live in the society by preventing the habitual offending. It’s about the re-integration of the offender into the society thus giving them an opportunity to prove themselves.
Restoration is where one is given the chance to make amends with the community and the victim thus making things better in a collaborative way.
