A cell begins to divide even though there are no growth hormones present. What could cause this? Be specific! Explain your reasoning.

Expert Solution

Cancer is the cause of cell division even without the growth hormone.

Cancer is an abnormal uncontrolled division of cells. Cancer is defined as uncontrolled proliferation of cells without any differentiation. The newly proliferated cells have noorderly structural arrangement and have no clearly understood cause. they also are useless. the cell formed in this way do not remain confirmed to one part of body. they penetrate and infiltrate into adjoining tissue and dislocate their functions. Cancerous cells continues to grow even after the cessation of stimuli , which evokes the growth response.

Causes of cancer-

1) Oncogenic transformation - which include factors which cause change in genetic material. They are radiation and chemicals. Radiation such as X-rays, cosmic rays , UV rays etc.. induces genetic variation , which becoming a predisposing factor for cancer. chemicals such as caffeine, nicotine products of combustion of coal and oil , constant use of artificial sweeteners lead to cancer. Also hormones level variations such as estrogen and progesterone are cause of cancer.

2) tumour promoters - they promote proliferation of cells, which have undergone oncogenic transformation. example some growth factors. ( cancerous cells didn't require growth factors to intiate the process of cell proliferation)

3) tumour viruses - some viruses known to connect with oncogenic transformation. ecause of presence of oncogenes in these viruses.
