Using clear drawings, give a coordination chemistry example of:
a) ionization isomers
b) fac and mer isomers
c) optical isomers
d) linkage isomers
e) hydrate isomers
Answer – We know coordination compounds are the compound in which coordinate bonds or compound which are contain the coordination complex are called as coordinate compounds.
We know isomer mean the compounds having the same molecular formula but different in structural formula. Coordination compounds have two types like stereoisomerism and structural isomerism.
a) Ionization isomer – This is the structural isomerism and it is the isomer in which formation of different ions in solution.
Example – [Co(NH3)5 (SO4)] Br and [Co(NH3)5 Br] SO4
In this one first compound gives Br- ions and second one gives SO42- ions with same molecular formula.
b) fac and mer isomers – This is geometric isomers in which fac mean the in the octahedron there are three ligand on same side then it is called facial or fac isomer and if three ligands are in the one plane then it is called meridional or mer isomer.
Example - [Co(NH3)3 Br3]
c) Optical isomers- we know the isomer which rotate plane-polarised light and non-superimposable mirror images of each other called optical isomers
Example – [CoCl(en)2(NH3)]2+
d) Linkage isomers – This isomer is occurred due to ambidentate ligands which can formed coordinating in more than one way.
Example - [Co(SCN)(NH3)5]Cl and [Co(NCS)(NH3)5]Cl
e) Hydrate isomers - This isomer is differ only in the water molecules. There is exchange of water molecule with inner and outer sphere.
Example -
[CrCl2(H2O)4]Cl.2H2O
[CrCl(H2O)5]Cl2.H2O
